Days away from May 4th, the yearly commemoration of the release of the original "Star Wars", Disney/Lucasfilm dropped a bombshell on our galaxy with the announcement of the cast for 2015's "Star Wars Episode 7". A few surprise names join a list of already rumored performers. The newcomers are: Domnhall Gleeson (star of "About Time"), Oscar Issac (star of "Inside Llewyn Davis"), Adam Driver (from HBO's "Girls"), John Boyega (of "Attack The Block" fame), Andy Serkis (Gollum in "The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy") and Oscar nominee Max Von Sydow (Ming the Merciless in cult classic "Flash Gordon"). The final new face is one Daisy Ridley, who will make her feature film debut with Episode 7. These selections are all smart choices in my opinion. With the exception of Serkis and Sydow, the cast is a strong ensemble of actors who have shown their talents before, but haven't yet had their breakout role. Such status should hopefully alleviate the mountain of pressure already on them, allowing them to do their own thing. Joining these fresh faces will be the iconic trio that started it all: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fischer and Harrison Ford. In addition, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker will also reprise their roles as Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2D2 respectively. It's an exciting new step for what's arguably the most anticipated movie of 2015. Director JJ Abrams and company have been making some smart decisions, let's hope they stick the landing. "Star Wars Episode 7" opens December 18, 2015.
