When people think of the Tomb Raider series, the first things they think of are the shorts, tight shirt, and big boobs. Well guess what, ALL are gone and I mean ALL, but replaced with a more realistic Lara, that is strong willed and protector of all. So grab your bow, arrows, rope and compass and let’s find out if this rises as a great reboot, or does it need to be thrown off of a cliff.
The Tomb Raider franchise has changed through the time, the only thing staying the same is the character and the puzzles. This Tomb Raider is a reboot, that will explore Lara Croft‘s humanity and show US, the beginnings of this generations Lara, and the makes her a great survivor
The game starts of with Lara Croft and her crew, aboard the Endurance, looking for an ancient Japanese civilization that worshipped a Sun God. The search brings them to the Devils Triangle, where a storm over takes the ship leaving Lara and the crew stranded on a mysterious island. Soon they find out that they are not alone and something very weird is happening that are stopping them and the others from leaving the island. So it is up to Lara to find out what is keeping them there and how they will survive the endeavor.
Crystal Dynamics the games producer said that this reboot will bring Lara Croft back to the top with action and storytelling, and guess what they SURE did. The story telling in this game is on par with an AAA movie. The voice acting are very convincing, they are full of emotion, giving you such a connection with Lara and her peers. The times where Lara is talking to herself, talking about the experience and her trying to stay sane through this journey are very telling to the where the series is headed.

The way Crystal Dynamics shows the evolution Lara, from the always doubtful girl to courage filled leader is what help make the game great. That coupled the gameplay makes the game even better. The first time you get to hold that bow in your and take aim, you this game is good. The climbing in Tomb Raider is that of Assassins Creed mixed in with Prince of Persia. The puzzles were not that difficult but might have been a challenge for those new to the genre or to the series but still worked.
The weapon system in the game is basic having a rifle, handgun, shotgun, and bow and arrow. There is an upgrade system that allows you to get more powerful weapons that will help you on your journey. You can upgrade by finding parts or by finding salvage strung across the island. During Lara’s journey you will even be able to upgrade her abilities like being able to climb faster, steady aim, loot more things and stealth kill better.
Crystal Dynamics has made a very beautiful game; the island is pretty and very life-like. The waterfalls, trees, wolves, and even the cliffs sides rival those cinematic of those in the movies. The action scenes are well put together showing off both the visual and greatness of the story-telling.

Next on the list is the multiplayer, which comes with many different modes. We all know that it comes with the basics, free-for-all and team deathmatch, but Crystal Dynamics has added a couple of new game type, like a capture flag type, that puts two team against each other one trying to stop the from capturing medical supplies. The gameplay is ok it resembles that of the Uncharted Series. The weapons system in the multiplayer has you upgrading and unlocking with leveling up. You also get to unlock characters in the game and use them.
Bottom Line: Crystal Dynamics has done a fantastic job with this reboot. Seeing the evolution of a character and seeing why Lara is the way she is, gives you an all new connection, make the game that much better. Sprinkled with the exploration, that have you finding books that give you backstory, and finding more tombs on the island will have you playing the game for more than 18 hours. The multiplayer is the only let down in the game, it just does not stand up to the greatness of the game. With that being said it still not bad but its just not the giant multiplayers out there, i.e. Call of Duty. After we take in all of that info we give the reboot Tomb Raider 9.3 out of 10.
